What Do We Feed Our Emus on The Homesthed?

Welcome back to The Homesthed's guide to emu ownership! Today, we're sharing a brief overview of what we are currently feeding our emus here on the farm. This is an excellent starting point for your mob, but we recognize that each owner must consider several factors in developing the right diet for their mob.

Chick Diet:

  • 50% Dumor 20% Chick Starter (you can use any 20% chick starter that is UNMEDICATED. Medicated feeds interrupt the absorption of important vitamins and minerals).

  • 50% Show Hutch Deluxe 17 Rabbit Feed (you can use other rabbit feeds, but this is the best. If you select another rabbit pellet, ensure alfalfa is the first ingredient).

  • Rooster Booster Poultry Booster Pellets (sprinkled on food daily)

  • Human-grade Liquid Vitamin B Complex in the water daily

We feed the chick diet above till 6 months old at which point we begin switching them over to our adult diet.

Adult Diet:

  • 50% Producer's Pride 16% Layer Pellet (any layer pellet can be used here, this is just what is readily and consistently available to us)

  • 25% Show Hutch Deluxe 17 Rabbit Feed (once again, another rabbit feed can be used but this is hands down the best)

  • 25% Retriever Hi-Protein Dog Food (another dog food can be used, we recommend selecting a high protein option for the additional protein and fat)

Another awesome diet to consider is "The Emu Island Diet", courtesy of the amazing Joanne Bartell, which can be viewed on "The Emu Island" Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/EmuIsland/
